New Name for Ambulatory Care Section

Mar 28, 2011

ASHP recently renamed the Section of Home, Ambulatory, and Chronic Care Practitioners to the Section of Ambulatory Care Practitioners. The new name is intended to be inclusive of all pharmacists who practice in ambulatory care settings, including, but not limited to, home, chronic, and long-term care. The change reflects the diversity of this group of practitioners as well as the expansion of pharmacy practice within the ambulatory care setting.

“As the practice of pharmacy has continued to evolve, the terms ‘medication therapy management services,’ ‘medical home,’ and ‘accountable care organization’ have become part of the language of pharmacists,” said Roger Klotz, BCNSP, FASCP, FACA, FCPhA, chair of the Section’s executive committee. “Opportunities for pharmacists to care for patients outside the four walls of a hospital have multiplied. Therefore, the Section’s former name was no longer sufficient to encompass all relevant ambulatory care practice settings.”
