Study Finds Drug Costs to Rise Again in 2012

Mar 23, 2012

Costs for medications will continue to rise in 2012 by as much as seven percent, according to a report recently published by the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy (AJHP). ASHP publishes this annual projection of drug expenditures to help hospitals plan drug budgets, which are a significant operating expense.

The report, Projecting Future Drug Expenditures – 2012 by James M. Hoffman, Pharm.D., M.S., BCPS, et al, examines drug expenditure trends in 2010 and 2011, projects drug expenditures for 2012, and explores factors likely to influence drug expenditures.

For 2012, the authors project a three to five percent increase in drug expenditures across all settings, a five to seven percent increase in expenditures for clinic-administered drugs, and up to a two percent increase in hospital drug expenditures.
